How to Adopt a Forever Friend

Please see website of specific rescue organizations for their adoption policies.

The Nacogdoches Animal Service and Adoption Center adoption fee for an unaltered dog or cat is $20.00 plus the cost of rabies vaccination and spaying or neutering your new companion.

Animals who are already spayed or neutered have a $30 adoption fee and can go home with you the same day. Animals older than 6 months who have not been altered will go to the vet of your choice for surgery where you can pick them up the next day.

You will be required to pay the shelter the cost of the spay/neuter surgery prior to your animal going to the clinic of your choice. You will receive a certificate from us to take to the vets office stating the surgery cost has been covered.

ALL animals under 6 months old who are adopted from the shelter MUST be spayed or neutered by the time they are 6 months old. NO exceptions. This is one way we can get a handle on the pet overpopulation crisis in Nacogdoches County.

Large Young Female Dog

More About No Name

Who is this dog with "No Name"? We don't know, we never got to know her. Through no fault of her own she found herself in a local animal control facility fighting against time for her very life. Sadly she lost that fight and her life.

This dog with no name and so many others like her find themselves in a desperate race against time every day, some of the lucky ones get a new lease on life through rescue groups and a few really lucky ones get adopted but many, many lose the fight.

Please remember these innocent souls when searching for a new family member, be patient and keep looking - the perfect match for you is out there just waiting to be discovered. If you look deep into their eyes behind the confusion, sadness, fear and despair you will see a flickering candle of hope burning. They are waiting to be saved, waiting for someone to help them win this all important battle they find themselves in.

Perhaps you can be the one to be a savior. Always consider adoption first and foremost when looking for a new family member. Maybe consider fostering, opening your home and lives to one of these waiting souls - the love and gratitude you receive from them is so worth it. Or maybe even foster-to-adopt. So many dogs, so many choices, so little time.

To all those who want to adopt a "Rescue dog"

You will not find Lassie or RinTinTin or Toto or even Ole Yellar in rescue. You are not going to find the next Westminster best in show or those who are perfectly groomed, classically beautiful, completely trained or perfectly behaved. They do not show up in rescue. We get the cast-offs, the leftovers. Dogs that other people have incompetently bred, that are inadequately socialized, ineffectively "trained" and badly treated. Most of our dogs have been pushed from one lousy situation to another. They have not had proper veterinary care, many have never known a kind or gentle touch or word, some have lived their lives in crates and others chained outside or in basements. They are scared, depressed and anxious. Some are sick. Some are broken. Some are angry. Many have given up and most are not pretty to look at.  But we NEVER give up on a dog, we are Rescue - to us they are as beautiful as any show dog. We take them in, we nurture them, we give them back their dignity, we heal their wounds - both physical and mental.  But first and foremost we show them love and kindness, show them that humans can be trusted to love them, return to them the affection and loyalty they showered on those before us who abused them or cast them out like unwanted garbage.

So please don't come to rescue for a "bargain" or to make yourself feel special, in fact don't come expecting to get anything at all.  If you are ready to open your heart and home to a new member of your family, if you are ready to give and receive love and loyalty, if you are ready to mend spirits (both theirs and yours), if you are ready to literally save a life - then by all means come. The love and gratitude you will see shining back at you from beautiful, soulful eyes will indeed make your spirit whole - a rescue dog will make you a better person and will teach you life-changing lessons, this we promise you.
